The Impact of Immigration on Democratic Institutions

Christopher Hale , Princeton University

Using similar methods and data to Clark et al. (2015) "Does immigration impact institutions?", I test whether there is an association between net migration and changes in the quality of democratic institutions over the period 1990-2011. I use the Polity IV index as the dependent variable and find evidence that immigrant stock and flow are associated with weaker improvements in polity score for more authoritarian countries, but no evidence that immigration leads to declining polity scores for more democratic countries.
