This study raises the question: for whom does parental separation matter the most? In order to do this, we identify heterogeneities in the educational consequences of parental separation, specifically focusing on differences in the effects along educational background and gender. We examine the grade performance of children at the end of compulsory schooling (9th grade) and their subsequent educational transitions to upper secondary education in Sweden.
