Using all births in the Netherlands between 1996 and 2016, we study the impact of changes in the provincial unemployment rate on fertility and cohort composition. We document a negative effect of an increase in the unemployment rate on fertility. The magnitude of the effect declines with parity and is particularly strong for lower educated women between the ages of 25 and 29.
