Database Design and Data Visualization for Demographic Data

Jan Vink , Cornell University

As an Applied Demographer and website developer I am maintaining many data tables and show many charts on my web site. By organizing my data in a systematic way, I was able to make it a lot easier to create data driven visualizations on my web site. The premise of my database design and visualizations is that each data point represents a combination of a [What], a [Where] and a [When]. Keeping [What]/[Where]/[When] fixed or allow for a set of different values allow for different ways of taking snapshots of the data and allows for data-driven visualizations that depend on the type of snapshot, rather than a specific set of values of the data.
